Richmond, VA - The Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE) is a nonprofit organization that uses older adults to help others generate economic gains. The nonprofit organization provides business counseling, professional guidance, workshops, and information, accessible to all, to maximize the success of America’s existing and emerging small businesses. SCORE has over ten thousand volunteers working under 389 chapters and have served over six million small business entrepreneurs since its conception in 1964.

Small businesses are the backbone of our nation’s economy. During the last 10 years, small businesses accounted for more than 75% of the jobs created in the United States. The SCORE Association, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneurial education and the formation, growth and success of small businesses nationwide. The public service mission is to help more entrepreneurs become successful small business owners through face-to-face and email business counseling.

SCORE is composed of 10,500 volunteer business mentors, both working and retired, who counsel businesses from 389 chapter offices throughout the country. SCORE volunteers hail from every facet of the business community. Some have worked at large corporations such as Kodak, Xerox or Boeing. Some have served in our military or worked for the local or federal government. Others have spent years cultivating their own small business. Last year, SCORE helped expand small business opportunities through assistance to more than 400,000 Americans.

SCORE provides free business counseling to small business owners and people who want to start their own businesses. Services include face-to-face counseling, low cost workshops, and free on-line tools and advice. Locally, the Richmond Chapter of Score is made up of 31 unpaid counselors, both retired and active business professionals. In 2008 YTD, the Richmond chapter has conducted monthly workshops and provided over 2200 total services for clients. In 2004 the chapter was recognized by the national organization as chapter of the year!
